KARATE NI SENTE NASHI

For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.

Sun Tzu

Karate ni sente nashi (空手に先手なし) translates as “There is no first attack in Karate”, and is one of the most important principles in traditional Karate-Do. It is one of the 20 precepts of Karate-Do attributed to Gichin Funakoshi, and it plays a fundamental role in how we train and also in how we carry ourselves outside of the Dojo.

The most obvious interpretation is that Karate is purely a system of self-defence. However, it isn’t saying that one must stand still and wait to be punched. In a real-world situation, that would be dangerous and even irresponsible. Instead, it’s about our mindset: a Karateka doesn’t look for fights, provoke people or show off.

Karate ni Sente Nashi teaches that Karate should only be used when faced with an immediate threat. However, that does not mean you can’t defend yourself.

Avoiding a conflict is the real first move. That could mean staying aware, walking away, or even trying to de-escalate a situation with words. If you can stop a situation from becoming violent, then that is always a win. If someone genuinely threatens you and there’s no safe way out, then you could potentially be left with no other choice but to protect yourself. No first attack does not mean no action…it means NO malicious action.

If you look closely at Shotokan kata, the opening movement is nearly always a block or some other defensive move rather than an attack. This is most likely not a coincidence, by beginning defensively kata teach us that karate is a response to violence, and not its cause. Kata teaches us to stay aware, protect ourselves and to act only when necessary.

Karate ni sente nashi is what defines Karate-Do as a peaceful martial art. It teaches that physical strength must always be balanced with humility and with respect for others. Those that truly understand Karate-Do are the ones who will never have to fight. This requires understanding and discipline, skills we need to learn just like our punches and kicks.
