SEICHUSEN: THE CENTRELINE OF KARATE-DO

In Shotokan Karate-Do the concept of Seichusen (正中線), literally translated as the correct centreline, plays a vital role in both attacking and defending. While it seems like a simple idea, understanding and applying Seichusen can transform the way you think about Karate-Do.

The concept of Seichusen refers to the imaginary vertical axis that runs through the centre of the body, from the top of the head down through the nose, sternum and down to the Tanden (centre of gravity). This line represents both your own centre and that of your opponent’s. Several of the human body’s most vital points, the eyes, throat, solar plexus, groin, all lie along this centreline. Striking along the Seichusen will increase the effectiveness of your attacks as you are targeting the body’s natural weak points.

Why is Seichusen Important?

By protecting your own Seichusen, you reduce openings in your guard. Think of your stances, blocks and the way you move as ways of protecting your Seichusen. While simultaneously viewing the Seichusen of your opponent as the primary target.

Seichusen is not just about external targets, it is also about your own internal alignment. When your techniques are executed along your own Seichusen, you ensure proper posture and balance. This alignment supports efficient hip rotation (koshi no kaiten), stability and more powerful movements.

Seichusen in Practice

So how does this work in the Dojo?

Kihon: We are taught to train punches, blocks, kicks etc. along the Seichusen. The reason is to generate maximum efficiency by aligning techniques with the body’s centreline.

Kata: Through bunkai we learn that many of the movements in kata are designed to protect the Seichusen while simultaneously attacking your opponent’s. Understanding the concept of Seichusen helps to clarify the purpose of kata, creating better timing and greater awareness of direction and flow.

Kumite: Strategy often comes down to exposing your opponent’s Seichusen while protecting your own. A slight change in direction can open up a direct line of attack to your opponent’s centreline.

The next time you are the Dojo, ask yourself…am I aware of my centreline? Am I protecting my centreline?  Am I targeting my opponent’s centreline?

Oss!
